Summary

In this episode of The Jamie Scrimgeour Podcast, I chat with Kate Chapman of This Life in Progress, an online community for divorced parents and blended families. Kate is a mom and stepmom to six kids between the ages of 6 and 16, a Co-Parenting expert, an experienced Executive Coach, a widely published author and the creator of the highly acclaimed co-parenting program the Total Co-Parenting Transformation.

Kate and I chat about all things blended families and finances. It's an interesting conversation because Kate and I handle finances completely opposite to one another. Darren and I merge everything, while she and her partner keep things completely separate. Not only does Kate share how she and her husband split finances (and why they do it that way), she talks about co-parenting in a blended family where the rules aren't always the same for all the kids.

0:42.7

which I'm sure I don't have to tell you is a pretty touchy subject.

0:47.1

Anyways, finances can cause a lot of stress in a first marriage when there isn't any of the

0:51.7

complications of step family dynamics. But then for second

0:55.5

marriages and, you know, second marriages where kids are involved, throw in child support payments

1:00.6

and alimony, financial responsibilities from the first marriage, different opinions on where

1:05.5

funds should be allocated, lawyers bills, the stress of having to divide up your net worth after your first marriage failed.

1:12.8

And while all of that combined, you know that country song that says it would have been cheaper

many blended families. In a recent blog post, I shared how we handle finances in our family,

1:28.8

and I'll link it for you below, but basically I shared that we ended up merging everything

1:33.5

from the very beginning. So shortly after I moved in, all of my paychecks started to go into

1:38.3

our joint account and my student loan payments, came out of the same account as like lawyers' bills

and expenses for the kids.

1:44.8

We always really had this like what's mine is yours mentality with money from the beginning.

1:50.8

And honestly, with me buying a lot of stuff for the kids, I ended up just having no money in my
