In case it’s new to you as well, it’s a winged cryptid that some portray as a giant bat, others claim it’s a flying primate. Personally, I think it looks like a werewolf with bat wings. Of course a lot of people likely don’t believe in heaven or hell and many will dismiss such things as mythical tales or folklore. However there are places on Earth that could be considered hell – no not Detroit or Wichita. We’re talking about actual places that look like the entrances to purgatory. And perhaps they really are. No, this is not the first line of a joke, but a common occurrence in Potrero Hill in San Francisco, California, during the 1880s. A man with no past returns from the dead. A detective who thought he’d seen everything knows that most of his cases are puzzles. Some are warnings. This one feels like a curse. In this city, the church bells toll without reason, the dead won’t rest, and something ancient hums just beneath the surface. THE TRUE CRIME CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: On Sunday, October 13, 1867, Ferdinand Hoffman fatally stabbed his ex-wife, Caroline Yost, inside the German Reformed Church in Canton, Ohio. The attack occurred after Hoffman, recently released from prison, followed Yost into the church and confronted her behind the belfry door. Witnesses reported hearing screams as Hoffman fled, leaving Yost with eighteen stab wounds. Yost, who had divorced Hoffman after years of reported abuse and his repeated arrests for crimes including counterfeiting and theft, survived for nearly a week before succumbing to her injuries. The tip of Hoffman’s knife had broken off during the attack, lessening the severity of later wounds. Hoffman was captured shortly after the stabbing by a group of citizens who prevented a lynching. He was held in jail awaiting murder charges. Authorities reported that Hoffman expressed no remorse, stating he regretted not killing Yost outright. The morning after Yost’s death, Hoffman was found dead in his cell, having hanged himself with a bedsheet. Officials left his body hanging for public viewing throughout the day. She was at an estate sale and came across something she immediately knew I’d want… a book entitled “Alfred Hitchcock Presents A Month of Mystery”. It’s very much like his TV show where he shared short stories from numerous authors. This anthology was published in 1969, with stories dating back as far as 1936. You'll most definitely be hearing more of these in future episodes because I love old creepy stories like these. In this episode it’s a story by Gerald Kersh originally published in 1968. Imagine this man in some vast city, New York or London. Imagine him on the third or fourth day of his solitude sitting in a house and hearing a ring at the door-bell!”*** Fredric Brown condensed this text to read "a sweet little horror story that is only two sentences long". Brown’s short story then goes on to elaborate on those two sentences and builds a more complete plot around them. “Knock” was originally published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and the Sci Fi Channel's Seeing Ear Theatre). And now it gets another adaptation – in this episode. The story was also reprinted in The Best Science Fiction Stories: 1949. And one particular demon has found notoriety through the Ouija board community, a demon you don’t want to risk opening a door for.
