204. When Bad Things Happen To The Rich

This week we explore the current AND historical animosity that arises between economic classes in times of financial crisis. If there were ever a time for “eat the rich” content to go viral, it’s now. Prices are up, wages are down, and Millennials and Gen Z are working harder than ever—for way less. Despite being the most educated generation, they’re drowning in debt while CEO pay has exploded—now 399 times what the average worker makes. Meanwhile, the middle class is shrinking and billionaires are multiplying like rabbits. So yeah, people are angry—and it’s not hard to see why. Looping in elements from our Attachment Theory AND Affluenza episodes, we'll discuss a few of the incidents currently in the national conversation. We cover the incidents, and post incident reactions, of the OceanGate disaster and the United healthcare CEO murder.  For an Ad Free Experience, please consider joining our Patreon. 203. Behind the Couch: "Inconceivable" Producer Jason Usry

This week we get to have a discussion with our amazing colleague, co-creator Jason Usry. Jason  is a multi-time Emmy nominated broadcast media veteran with three movies produced with one in post-production and others currently in development.   He's the editor of some of your favorite podcasts (including this one), he's founder of Ear Cult, LLC - a company he's working to build into a multimedia storytelling empire.  He's an editor, consultant, creator, storyteller, journalist, and most importantly a friend. We discuss his newest project, Inconceivable: The Story of Temujin Kensu, an investigation into the 1986 murder of Scott Macklem. Kensu was convicted of the crime, but many believe he was wrongfully convicted. Jason discusses his commitment to approaching this case with an open mind, initially assuming Kensu’s innocence before uncovering more complex truths... revelations that are happening in real time. Behind the Couch: JonBenet Ramsey Case Discussion livestream w/ Rebekah Sebastian (2021)

We have been asked about our thoughts on the JonBenet Ramsey case A LOT lately given the new documentary release. And although this is Dr. Shiloh’s Roman Empire, we have rarely commented on it.   Therefore, we are releasing this audio from the Summer of 2021 (remember those pandemic days?) when Dr. Shiloh and Rebekah Sebastian discussed key elements of the case, the intruder theory, and even some suspects not mentioned in the recent documentary. We end things with a little audience participation trivia game.   *Please note that this was recorded in June 2021 and, although we pivot into a serious tone when discussing the case, there are jovial moments in the livestream while interacting with a live audience. 189. Vintage Case: Palm Springs and the B- List Murderer, Tom Neal

This week the docs take a brief jaunt OUT of Los Angeles to the sunny and gorgeous sands of Hollywood’s Desert Playground - aka Palm Springs. Although a year round destination for relaxation and glamour, there are dark aspects among the glittering sapphire pools of the Oasis of the Desert’s past. After all, a place with golden age ties to Hollywood is bound to have some sordid stories to tell - case in point: the tumultuous life of Tom Neal, a promising Hollywood actor in the late 1930s, groomed to be the next Clark Gable. Neal's career, however, was overshadowed by scandalous affairs and headline-grabbing incidents that eventually derailed his success. Despite a brief resurgence as a leading man in the 1940s, his off-screen behavior, including a notorious altercation with actor Franchot Tone, led to his downfall. By the 1950s, Neal struggled to find work, relegated to minor roles on local soap operas, where he continued to clash with colleagues. Despite several attempts to reinvent himself over the years, his desperation and addiction led to business failures, scandal and a brutal murder. 188. Body Language Analysis

This week the docs dive into the murky pool of "Body Language Experts" to discuss the explosion of self proclaimed subject matter experts on a field that lacks empirical evidence. The success of the 2009 American television series "Lie To Me" brought widespread attention to the dubious field of deception detection through body language, facial expressions, and micro-expressions, encouraging many people with both legitimate science, law enforcement and military backgrounds to present as experts: Since 2009, the world has seen an explosion of body language experts writing books, charging exorbitant fees for speaking engagements and popping up as talking heads on info-tainment shows that have a nexus with true crime. Bullying in American schools from elementary education through the college years has gained a LOT of traction over the past few decades: attention that is much needed and very much delayed due to characteristics of a culture that has accepted these terrible behaviors. Mental health and risk assessment professionals have brought more light to this topic making difficult and complex conversations more likely to occur than in the past. From threatening and coercive behaviors to outright criminal acts, bullying has morphed into a hybrid set of actions that take place IRL AND in the digital world of e communication and social media. 183. Extremism in Military and Law Enforcement

This week the docs tackle case studies and psychological motivations for the development of extremism within US military and law enforcement. The growing threat of extremism presents a substantial threat to the security of the US as a nation and on the community level with law enforcement. Some of the most notorious extremists in the U.S. military are responsible for the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal Building, brutal racially oriented murders by soldiers at Fort Bragg and the Fort Hood shootings by a jihadist military psychiatrist. Extremism within law enforcement presents a dual threat that impacts both the integrity of the profession and the trust crucial for building effective relationships with the community. 177. Documentary Review: Chowchilla

This week we watched and reviewed the CNN (now on MAX) documentary, Chowchilla. In the late 70's, in the farming town of Chowchilla, California, 26 children and their school bus driver were stopped in the middle of a rural road by three armed men. The men systematically kidnapped the driver and the children and sequestered them in a dark and virtually airless truck trailer and then buried them. While all of the victims survived, they have spent their lives dealing with a multitude of symptoms of trauma and we get to hear from them in this truly bizarre tale. 173. Documentary Review: Hell Camp

This week the docs review the one - episode documentary entitled "Hell Camp." It's a fascinating and necessary subject that falls somewhat flat in its narrative structure while still illuminating a dark chapter in the recent US history of behavioral modification and "personal growth" wilderness camps. While the sales pitch of Steve Cartisano's wilderness camp entitled Challenger Foundation sold a bill of goods to frustrated parents across the US; a way to control and re-make their "out-of-control" teens, the kids' experience at the wilderness camp in the harsh Utah desert was a nightmare. Introducing: Season 2 of PROOF

The second season of PROOF: Murder at the Warehouse takes Susan Simpson and Jacinda Davis to Manteca, CA where they reinvestigate the murder of 18-year-old Renee Ramos. On June 5, 2000, Ramos’ body was found buried under a pile of debris inside the shell of a new Home Depot building. Despite tips hinting at alternate suspects - tips that were ignored until now - Renee’s boyfriend, 18-year-old skateboarder Jake Silva, and Ty Lopes, the 33-year-old uncle of one of Jake's close friends were arrested for her murder. The questionable testimony of a 14-year-old boy was the key evidence used to convict them both to life in prison. Ty Lopes was killed in prison in 2011. Twenty-three years after Renee Ramos was murdered, Jake Silva remains in prison and maintains he is innocent. In season two of PROOF: Murder at the Warehouse, Susan and Jacinda travel the streets of Manteca, reinvestigating the case against Jake and Ty – and in the process uncover long-overlooked evidence about what really happened to Renee. Follow the case as Susan and Jacinda uncover long overlooked evidence about what really happened to Renee by listening to PROOF: Murder at the Warehouse wherever you get your podcasts.

170. Behind the Collar Part 1: Unveiling Criminality in the Clergy

It’s a new year and that means a new profession to examine in terms of criminality. The bad behavior of individuals of the clergy hits harder than most due to their achieved authority status and sacred trust. The docs give an overview of organized religious atrocities before getting into individuals' crimes. They also dive into the research that tries to explain the Catholic sex abuse scandal and address relevant personality traits, before covering the Warren Jeffs case. 168. Christmas Mystery: The Sodder Family Disappearance

This week, the docs deviate from a classic forensic psych topic in order to bring you a sinister and tragic holiday mystery: The disappearance of four of the ten Sodder Family children in 1945 during a horrific and destructive house fire on Christmas Eve. To this day, the trail of the missing children remains cold with theories that range from kidnapping to murder. One thing is certain: the 45 minute blaze that destroyed their family home could not have incinerated their remains. The docs discuss the complex grief that emerges from the loss of children and siblings and its impact on the family dynamic. Join the docs this week for an episode that examines the intersection between criminal acts and the diagnosis of Schizoid Personality Disorder. Cases discussed include the first California school shooting and the brutal and impulsive murder of a child in Brooklyn.
