Joey does NOT have Valentine's Day plans with "college boy," so what will the gang be doing for the Hallmarkiest of holidays? Attending an ANTI-Valentine's Day party thrown by Matt Caulfield, some rich jerk from school we've never heard of before -- and since the event is very secret and exclusive so it doesn't get raided by cops, finding it requires a little tradecraft. Everyone should be motivated to figure out where to go, since they have a visitor to impress: Kate (Alexandra Breckenridge!), Jack's ex-girlfriend from Rhode Island. She's fresh off a breakup, so Pacey decides the best way to get her through it is for Dawson to try to hook up with her -- and you KNOW Joey is as judgy about that as she was about the party itself until she actually showed up for it. Elsewhere, it's finally time for the date Henry and Jen have been talking about for several episodes. Joey and Bessie's new bed & breakfast has finally opened, but since they spent every cent on the construction and left nothing for promotion, they don't actually have any guests. (They can't even ask their old friend Gale to do a puff piece on the opening, since she's been crapping out at every network she's applied to for a new job in journalism.) Pacey takes it upon himself to track down Fred Fricke, the biggest tastemaker in B&Bs, to come review the place for the New York Times travel section -- which would be a good idea maybe a month in when Bessie and Joey have worked out some of the kinks, but maybe not right now when there's still a room under construction and there aren't any guests. Pacey then tries to fix the fix by asking all their loved ones to come fill up the place for Fricke's benefit, and since Mitch brings Gale, that sends Dawson into a tailspin. Sharing accommodations isn't something Jack and Andie have done lately, as she keeps reminding him -- on, he assumes, their father's orders. But is Joseph even the one who's anxious for Jack to move back home? Henry isn't part of the staycation crew, but he has just arranged a dinner for two at Jen's favorite Capeside restaurant, so he's very much on her mind. He's returned home again for Capefest, an ill-defined free music festival that seems to be mainly about camping on the beach. Though Jack is apparently not a fan of popular music, he is easily convinced to come hang out, making Jen come as backup. Also attending? Henry, a veggie burger-grilling, Bruce Springsteen-covering renaissance man who has absolutely no interest in Jen and her inconsistent attempts at platonic friendship. Nikki has embedded herself in the Capeside High film department, getting the extremely offscreen Mr. Jordan to break all the rules of equipment loans so she can use it to work on her latest project. When Dawson decides to take his righteous indignation to her house, it backfires into an invitation for dinner from the adorably proud Principal Green, and exposure to her bedroom and values causes Dawson to experience a crisis of...well, interior design. Andie has decided to volunteer as Assistant Director on the school production of Barefoot In The Park, partly as a distraction from her feelings about her breakup with Pacey, but her plans go to hell when she finds out the English teacher directing the play has recruited Pacey specially to be his male lead. Almost four months after becoming a shock box office hit, The Blair Witch Project still has a stranglehold on culture, if we want to be generous and use that term to describe Dawson's Creek. The core four are reading The Crucible in English class, and naturally Dawson decided that he's too special to do assignments as assigned; he's convinced Principal Green -- who's teaching their class to free Mitch up for football stuff, presumably -- to let him make a documentary about a local witch legend. ("Isn't The Crucible kind of...not really about the Salem witch trials?" We'll get into it.) He'd already arranged to have Pacey and Jen "help" so that they could also blow off their papers, and when a desperate Joey runs into the video store to rent The Crucible because she's run out of time to read the play AND the last copy is gone, Dawson belatedly remembers she exists and offers to let her in on the scheme too. On the island, the kids ignore warnings not to get lost in the woods or stay past dark. Joey and Dawson also ignore good taste and make the story of the one accused witch whose body was never found, and whose dalliance with her true love led to her conviction in the first place, into a stand-in for their own stupid relationship problems. Meanwhile, Jen finds a love spell in a gift shop book and decides to try it out on Pacey, for sport. Back home, Andie lets the tiny amount of power Principal Green granted her on the student disciplinary committee go straight to her head, and her citation-writing hand. Pacey is keeping busy enlisting members of the police auxiliary to help turn the Potter cottage into a B&B, but drops everything when Andie calls Joey crying that Rob committed sexual misconduct against her, but then won't agree to report him to the authorities. When that doesn't work, she threatens blackmail with the stolen PSAT. Dawson is so fired up that he does some actual PI work! Is the information he uncovers worth the trouble he gets in with Doug? Henry is still so smitten with Jen that Jack tries causing a date to break out spontaneously without Henry's having to ask Jen (since he is physically unable to speak to her). And when Joey finds out that her latest rejection sent Rob after Andie, she takes extreme measures to protect her friend. He decides to do something about Jack, the gay football star, and gets signoff from everyone except Jack's coach, Mitch. Jen is also implicated in football culture when the other cheerleaders make a kiss from her a prize in a silent auction, and is so appalled that she resigns as head cheerleader (although events leading up to this do suggest that she was ready to do that regardless and the auction just provided a convenient pretext). Now sprung from his relationship with Andie, Pacey involves Joey in his latest shenanigans; getting caught cutting class for a trip to the post office lands them an unorthodox and moderately punishment from Principal Green that -- get this -- ALSO braids into the football storyline. Andie is trying to put her PSAT cheating in the rearview, but when Principal Green tells her he needs to see her about a disciplinary matter, it revs up her paranoia. The entire junior class is in a tizzy about the imminent PSAT, the practice for the test that could possibly determine the entire course of their lives. But maybe they don't ALL have to stress about it so much: somehow, Eve comes into possession of a copy, which -- in her established role as a chaos agent -- she gives to Dawson. Then, he lets all his closest friends know he has it so that they can tell him what to do about it; unfortunately, that's when they all have to go outside for a fire drill, leaving their stuff, and when they come back in...the test is gone. Suspicions start flying around as to who the culprit could be, and the complete lack of evidence, apart from past behavior possibly informing actions in the present, doesn't stop Dawson making some pretty uncharitable AND unfounded accusations. Meanwhile, football is apparently still happening whether we like it or not. Jack suspects his teammates are being extra-hard on him for homophobic reasons; Henry tries to help him so that Jack might return the favor by getting him a proper introduction to his dream girl, Jen. Mitch is, as we learned in the premiere, Capeside High's football coach, and both he and Principal Green are very focused on turning around the team's years-long losing streak. (This contradicts what we were told about now long-gone football star Cliff, but never mind; he's in a better place.) Mitch and the principal thus enlist Dawson to create a promotional film for the team, and somehow he finds the time around condom shopping, because Eve is still around -- now as a Capeside senior -- and still very openly coming on to Dawson whenever she sees him. It's too bad Dawson can't use footage of the current team, because freshman quarterback Henry Parker (Michael Pitt) is actually good, and by chance finds the wide receiver of his dreams in Jack, whom Mitch soon drafts to join the team; this should provide a nice break for Jack from worrying about why his dad, who has moved his business to Capeside so that Andie can resume her studies there, doesn't want Jack to join them. Speaking of Andie: she's inconveniently released from her residential treatment center days in to the school year. Pacey is overwhelmed with excitement about getting to pick her up -- after having apparently only written emails and letters the whole time she was gone -- but when he gets there, he finds her with a boy, and then seems to be avoiding Pacey whenever he tries to get some time alone with her. Dawson, returning from spending his whole offscreen summer in Philadelphia with Gale, ends up on a bus next to a very confident pixie-cut blonde. When she disappears after he apparently bores them both to sleep yammering about Joey, he assumes he'll never see her again. He assumes wrong, and is no match for her aggressive come-ons. Her sexual overtures while Dawson's out driving them around in Mitch's boat lead Dawson to make some reckless choices with expensive consequences; knowing this girl works at the local exotic dance establishment, Pacey gets the idea to knock off Risky Business with a stripper party at the Leery house. Through all this, Joey has alternated between parrying the unwanted attention of Rob Logan, her new boss at the marina, and regretting the way she told Dawson off in the Season 2 finale. Roomies Jen and Jack have reached a new level of platonically intimate friendship and are so adorable even Grams seems like they're giving her a cavity -- but in a fun way! Less fun: the tyranny of cheer captain Belinda McGovern, who is terrorizing her classmates with slut-shaming and fatphobia. Jen notices, apparently for the first time, and decides to fight back by trying out for the cheerleading team. Jack having resolved, at the end of the last episode, to call his dad for help with Andie since he couldn't put it off a single second longer, Joseph arrives with a distinctly unhelpful announcement: he's selling the house and bringing the kids back to Providence so that both Andie AND her extremely offscreen mother can get full-time medical care. This is, of course, bad news: Andie doesn't want to say goodbye to the best boyfriend any teenaged girl ever had, and Jack doesn't want to resume living with a parent who definitely hasn't accepted Jack's coming out (and barely accepted him before that anyway). The McPhees' possible relocation has Jen wondering if it's time for her to leave Capeside too, but a call home to HER extremely offscreen mother lets her know that at least one move she took for granted as an option may no longer be available. After his stressful dinner with Miss Kennedy in the last episode, Dawson is stressed out about his final film assignment, but his idea of interviewing the people around him to describe their "character arcs" over the past year results in him learning more about Joey's dad than he wanted to. Andie -- worried that Jen might be right when she says Abby would still be alive if Andie hadn't kicked her and Jen out of the wedding -- doesn't correct Mrs. Morgan about her supposed friendship with Abby, AND agrees to deliver a eulogy at her funeral. Jack realizes he may have been the last person to kiss Abby before her death.  Joey tries to keep a lid on her feelings so old grief about her mother's death three years earlier doesn't boil over. She claims the anti-anxiety meds are for her mother, with whom she shares a first name, but: watch this space. Art student Joey has progressed to nude figure drawing; Jack is very complimentary about her first attempt, which is why it's unfortunate when FAMOUSLY CLUMSY JACK spills his drink all over it. He doesn't want her to fail the assignment, so there's just one thing for it: he will pose nude for her! What could go wrong? Dawson has finished his script and started auditions with his new producer Jen. He does not appreciate literally everyone telling him they don't know why his characters don't have sex, and the continuing argument about it between him and Jen lead them...well, backwards, at least as far as their relationship goes. She's also SO new that she thinks her ticket might get a lift from adding Joey, forcing Joey to explain that she's very unpopular and she would rather not run. Then frontrunners Chris and Abby post up at the Icehouse to talk strategy; Abby overhears Jack urging Joey to change her mind, then runs her mouth so much about what losers they are that she goads Joey into running after all. Things seem like they're going to go well...until the debate, when Abby disgorges all of Andie's family secrets. Elsewhere, Dawson has completed his next script. First reader Jen thinks it's hampered by Dawson writing teens like a middle-aged man, and offers to help him discover what it might be like if he acted out irresponsibly like a normal teenager. Though his life has mostly sucked lately, Dawson gets some good news for a change: his horror movie won a special award at the extremely offscreen film festival in which he entered it, and the prize is a not insignificant amount of money to help him make his next movie. (Oof, the threat inherent in that phrase: Dawson's NEXT movie.) He's excited to reunite with Joey, his producer on the last film, but since they worked together she's developed her own interests and isn't going to have time to be a helpmeet on his. Dawson actually responds to this in a very selfless way, but then he sees Jack walking up to take Joey out on a not-quite-date and decides maturity is for chumps and he'd rather go to a "kegs and eggs" party with Jen and all the other degenerate local teens. Pacey and Andie are getting close enough for her to let him come study at her house and interact with her mother, which is how he happens to be in the right place at the right time to help Andie manage a crisis. It's a full moon! Vincent and Jen make a coffee date, which is tough on Abby, who can't decide whether she actually wants to be friends with Jen, or just have someone around to bounce her crazy off. And since the coffee date isn't at the new café we keep seeing but at Grams's house, things percolate dangerously. As we saw at the end of the last episode, Tamara somehow has the nerve to show her face back in Capeside AFTER EVERYTHING. Officially it's to sell her house and also a warehouse (???), the latter possibly to Mitch for his fake restaurant, which is why Dawson is the first credits-cast Capeside High student to see her. He does TRY to warn Pacey, but not hard enough, since as we keep saying, he's a bad friend. And while Andie does pick up on a vibe when she witnesses Pacey running into Tamara totally unprepared (bad friend, is what he has), she's too worried about sorting out how Pacey feels about Andie herself to interrogate why he's so thrown by a chance reunion with an old teacher. Laura continues her mentorship of Joey through an art lecture and then a drawing class, strongly encouraging Joey to consider pursuing art study more seriously. Dawson seems to think this possible new "hobby" is absolutely adorable, then can't figure out why Joey is insulted by his tone. Undeterred by Dawson treating her like a precocious child, she decides to check out an art exhibition on her own, and when Bessie convinces her to take Jack, she accidentally stumbles into having a lot in common with a boy friend who's not her boyfriend. Abby and Jen have a chance meeting with a hot fisherman named Vincent, but no amount of reminding each other and the viewer that he is much much much MUCH too old for them can stop this storyline, apparently. After Pacey bombs his marine biology midterm, his teacher offers to let him make it up by doing an extra credit project with a student from another section. That student turns out to be Joey, who isn't thrilled that a grade she's trying to earn is going to depend in part on her least diligent friend. Now that everyone's back from the cruise, it's time for a reckoning. Peter tells Eve he wants a divorce because of the way she maneuvered him off the ship for days so that she could bone Tony, but she yells that actually Amanda did that. So Peter confronts Amanda about that, not knowing she's coming straight from seeing the film Lexi ruined and is truly in no mood. Tony refuses to shell out for a reshoot, so Amanda assesses her life and next steps and ends up, where else, at the hospital to tell Peter that while she did scheme to keep him from getting on the launch off the island, sleeping with him wasn't part of her plan. Peter decides to end his marriage, Amanda decides to close her agency, and if Eve and Kyle aren't happy about having all their suspicions confirmed, that's their problem -- or it is until Eve seems determined to make it everyone's problem. The shuttering of Amanda's agency also clears a path for Lexi to go after Tony's business herself, and by "Tony's business," we mean...well, you know what we mean. But when Billy (somehow) hears about the split and reappears to try to get Jen back some more, she firmly shuts him down, forcing him to take the long way around: inviting Dawson to come with him to a bar in Providence where Billy knows the bouncer and thus can get his underage ass in. (Pacey comes too, because...they needed something for Pacey to do.) Back in Capeside, Joey accepts a lift to school from cool football player Warren (Eric Balfour!), immediately regretting it when he claims that he and Joey had sex.
