It is used to express "not only...but also..." in English. In Chinese, we use the character "既" (jì) to introduce the first aspect or quality, and "又" (yòu) to introduce the second aspect or quality. Unlike"又......又......" which is used colloquially, "既......又......"is used in more formal writing.
