رکود بزرگ آمریکا و سقوط بازار بورس وال استریت در آمریکا که در سال 1929 اتفاق افتاد یکی از بزرگترین روکودهای اقتصادی تاریخ بود که یک دهه طول کشید و آثار بسیار مخربی بر اقتصاد آمریکا و حتی اروپا گذاشت. بورس وال استریت که در دهه 1920 نفوذ بسیار زیادی بین مردم پیدا کرده در دوران شکوفایی اقتصادی یکی از راه های کسب درآمد و سودهای بسیار بالا بود که بورس نیویورک را تبدیل به محبوب ترین بنگاه اقتصادی در تمام کرده بود، در سالهای بعد از جنگ جهانی اول آمریکا برخلاف کشورهای اروپایی نه تنها دچار رکود نشد بلکه میزان تولیدات داخلی را هم به شدت افزایش داد و سطح رفاه اجتماعی را بالاتر برد. درآمد خوب مردم به خاطر شرایط خوب اقتصادی باعث شد روند خرید و فروش سهام در بورس وال استریت به اوج برسه و هشدارها در مورد بروز رکود اقتصادی جدی گرفته نشه
