In the 1950s, a small unknown Berkshire-based film company known as Hammer

began to develop a name for themselves by producing terrifying exploitational gothic horror movies.

They would often take classic movie monsters made famous by Hollywood studios in the 30s,

but give them a distinctly British twist, whilst also shooting them in technicolor and drenching them in bright red blood. In the mid-60s, whilst at their peak of popularity, Hammer Studios made a zombie movie.

The zombie, unlike the vampire or the werewolf or the mummy, was still

little known at this point, an unpopular monster, one that only resided in Haiti in Caribbean

folklore. But in 1966 the movie Plague of the zombies brought

the zombie to the UK and introduced the idea that the living dead might be

closer than you think that they may not be in a far-off island in the

Caribbean. They could be clambering out of their graves in your village.
