The We've all watched countless horror movies in which two-dimensional archetypal teens little more than

cannon fodder behave stupidly and are consequently picked off by monsters.

And we find ourselves asking why? Why would you go outside to investigate that

strange noise? Why would you run up the stairs when you could be running out the front door?

Why decide to split up when you're clearly safer sticking together?

You understand what's at stake here? In 2012, filmmakers Drew Godard and Joss Weiden presented us with some answers to these questions

in a fresh, witty, intelligent dissection of the horror film in a way

we had never seen before. This wasn't just meta storytelling in the style of a 90s Kevin Williamson movie.

This was offering up a brilliantly original hypothesis.

What if this formulaic violent sacrifice of archetypal teens was a necessary evil to avoid the end of the world?

What if these teenagers year upon year had to die to save the rest of humanity?

Would that make it all worth it?

Or is it time to end these tired old-fashioned tropes and traditions and simply let the world burn.
