Sorry, welcome to Jimmy's Jobs of the Future. You are a deep tech investor. Tell us what deep tech is.

1:13.6

Deep tech tends to be a lot of different things for different people, it's actually probably one of

1:17.2

the most unhelpful terms out there. At a very high level it's smart stuff, but what that actually

1:23.7

means in terms of the detail is it's a type of technology that often has years of research that's

1:30.2

gone into the making. You could be talking easily sort of seven to ten years in the lab in a university

1:36.6

environment which is where deep tech tends to come from because you have those significant

1:42.4

research budgets that go into creating something that has a real step change in benefit to the end

1:49.2

customer. This real paradigm shift in approach that gives this extreme benefit in comparison to

1:56.9

other digitisation technologies. Essentially it has a layer or many layers of science behind it.

2:03.8

Indeed indeed and that often goes into the strong intellectual property base which gives these

2:08.8

companies that clear water to go from research into commercialisation. Two of the great examples

2:14.8

of it are artificial intelligence and robotics. What are your thoughts on those in terms of where

2:21.7

will these create jobs because actually when people talk about AI and robots quite often there's

2:27.3

sort of a doomsday scenario of them taking lots of jobs. Yes absolutely. So I think that goes into

2:34.8

many different levels in that as I mentioned most deep tech comes from university environments

2:40.9

and in 2020-2021 there were 56,000 new jobs that were created from university spin outs.
