When it comes to presidents, most people are interested in the big ones, the Washington's, the

Lincoln's, and the Roosevelt's.

The obscure presidents, well, no one really ever thinks about them.

And if they do, it's usually to malign them or make fun of them in some way.

And a lot of those obscure presidents seem to exist in history as the

scenery and the background for more important figures. For instance, presidents who served before

the Civil War are often just looked at as failures or just the prelude to a much greater

president, Abraham Lincoln. And I'm not saying that this is a

bad thing. It's not entirely unreasonable to point out that some presidents are considered

more effective than others. But I think that when we do this to the point of dismissing every

obscure president, we sometimes forget that even the Millard Fillmore's of the world at one point

weren't seen as just a prelude to someone else, but a significant figure in their own right.

After all, no matter how terrible or obscure a president was, they still reach the highest

office in the land, in a country of millions of people.

And that has to count for something.

So my guest today will share with us the life story of one of those obscure presidents.
