The city of Eap stood witness to the four long years of the Great War.

Big battles raged here, long periods of static trench warfare,

thousands of dead on both sides.

This was the immortal salient.

I've just returned from a week at Epe,

my first battlefield visit of the year and good to be back on the old front line.

I recorded some videos while I was out there using some new gear

and those should be coming up on YouTube in

the foreseeable future. It's something that I hope to expand upon over the coming year and I think

it gives a kind of new dimension really to what we do here on the podcast which will always be at the

heart of the old front line but I think having some visuals to go along with it

to perhaps retell some of the stories that we've already done through videos

is something that we'll look to do in the future.

But one of the great things about being out there was once again walking the ground,

and this is such an important aspect of visiting battlefields.

It's good to travel in a coach, it's good to travel in your car, but it's much better to get out of a vehicle,

get on the ground and walk that ground and see it from the perspective of the men who were there,

from that ground level perspective, get to know the

geography, even slight inclines when you're walking them, you can begin to see how important

they were more than 100 years ago in relation to the battles and the engagements that were

fought there. And I think as well, it's another level in how we connect to that

landscape today because it kind of felt like spring this week. The winter isn't over yet,
