This isn't a fantasy novel. This is the life of Mary Queen of Scots and her legendary four Marys,

Beaton, Seton, Fleming, and Livingston. Today we're going to talk about why these

girls were chosen, what role they played in Mary's life, and what happened to them after their

Today, like I said, we are going to talk about the four Marys, the girls who accompanied Mary Queen of Scots and who stayed loyal all the way until the end.

Let's get into it. When Mary Queen of Scots was just five years old,

like we said, she was bundled up and sent across the channel to France to marry the heir to the

French throne. It was a political alliance, a safety measure, and the beginning of a long royal

drama. But she didn't go alone. Four other little girls sailed with her, all of them

Scottish, all of them noble-born, and all of them, as luck would have it, named Mary. To modern

ears, that sounds almost suspiciously convenient, but in 16th century Scotland, Mary was a wildly

popular name. It wasn't unusual to have several in the same family,

let alone in the same court. Still, the fact that these four girls all shared the queen's name and

were raised alongside her from early childhood gave them a kind of mythical status. They became

known simply as the four Mary.

Their real names were Mary Beaton, Mary Seton, Mary Fleming, and Mary Livingston.

And they weren't just handpicked for companionship.
