Peace be with you. Friends, with this week we resume ordinary time and the

church gives us the rather extraordinary story of the wedding feast at Canaan.

Marvelously told, of course, and filled with theological richness. To be in

an away this story is puzzled people up and down the ages because it's the first

of Jesus' great signs in John's gospel that Word he uses for Miracle typically

is sign. There's a whole series of signs that indicate His divinity and the

first one is this miracle at Canaan. And here's why people have found it curious.

So the first indication of the divinity of Jesus is He provides more wine and a

wedding reception. It seems just a little bit mundane. It wasn't a nature miracle

like the calming of the storm at sea. It wasn't the raising of the dead. It was

providing more alcohol experience at a wedding reception. So people wonder what

is going on there. Well, as always, especially with John, we have to read this

with very biblical lenses in front of our eyes. See, when these people are

writing, the audience they're assuming is one that really knows the

scriptures. And they assume they know how to read these signs and symbols. And
