long time listener here of the Wilkane podcast, it's not hard to tell. I kind of tend to have a white-knuckle grip on life. I have strong opinions. I speak in declarative sentences. I go on and on at length with you three times a week and you

can only imagine the speeches I give my family. But my mistake, I think, is to think of life and to think of parenting as a sculptor, as though I have a blank piece of clay.

And if I have all the right values and virtues and all the right actions and if I give just the right speeches I can shape this clay into something hopefully the best version of itself, the hidden sculpture inside the mud.

I think I was hanging out with a buddy this past week and they said to me, parenting is much more like being a gardener than a sculptor.
