Summary

Acts 1:1-5 - In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

1:48.0

Now, let's pause for a moment. Let me just outline what's going on here.

1:52.0

This is Dr. Luke, Luke who was a physician wrote this and he's writing it to this guy, Theophilus.

1:59.0

And we don't know much about theophilus and there's all kinds of theories about who he might have been.

2:03.0

But it's enough to say that he's writing to a friend to tell him about what happened after Jesus rose from the grave.

2:12.0

And so he's kind of doing a little review here like I might do at the beginning of a morning mindset episode to get us up to speed on the context.

2:19.0

And he says, I was telling you in my other book, which is the gospel of Luke.
