Summary

"Parenting just demands so much more of you, just more than you ever even thought yourself capable of giving. You do it because you want to, because you love them, of course, but also because you have no choice. This just is what it is."

Ryan describes the obligation that all parents now share on today's Daily Dad Podcast.

Welcome to the Daily Dad podcast where we provide one lesson every day to help you with your

0:14.1

most important job being a dad. These are lessons inspired by ancient philosophy, by practical

0:20.3

wisdom, and insights from dads all over the world.

0:24.5

Thank you for listening, and we hope this helps.

0:33.3

Your feelings don't count.

0:36.3

One thing you quickly learn about being a parent is that your opinions,

0:40.1

your limitations are irrelevant. Oh, you're exhausted and need to sleep. Well, if your kid isn't

0:46.1

asleep, you're not sleeping. Oh, you'd rather not work and would prefer to live on a beach somewhere.

0:51.9

Cool. Tell that to your mortgage payments or your medical bills.

0:56.1

Parenting just demands so much more of you, just more than you ever thought yourself capable of

1:02.2

giving. You do it because you want to. You do it because you love them, of course, but you also have no

1:07.6

choice. It's your responsibility, it's your obligation. It just is what it is.

1:12.2

We have to remember this, especially lately. The fact that we're done with COVID-19 doesn't mean

1:18.0

it's done with us. The fact that you'd really like to do this or that because it's been so long

1:22.9

doesn't change anything. If it's not safe, it's not safe and you can't do it. That's the thing about being a dad.

1:29.3

You don't get to throw up your hands. You don't get to have an opinion. You just have to do it because this is your job, because you signed up for it. There's no room here for magical thinking. There's no room for your perceived limitations or being at the end of your rope, as we sometimes say.

1:45.1

The rope is as long as it needs to be. We'll go along as we'll go as long as we need to.

1:50.8

We'll stick with what's right as long as we have to. Our feelings about it do not count.

1:57.9

You're listening to a daily dad podcast, one meditation a day inspired to help you do your most important job, which is be a great father.

2:08.3

These are meditations inspired by ancient wisdom, psychological research, and just great strategies from normal dads just like you.
