Answering your dog sport questions! Even if you don’t do dog sports, many of the questions relate to
dog training in general. My voice is a bit raspy as we’re just wrapped up a first ever global four day
agility camp entirely through Zoom.
In the episode you'll hear answers covering:
• Connecting with your dog better when running an entire agility course.
• Giving motivation a boost when competing.
• How often my dogs do fitness training.
• Preventing arthritis in sports dogs.
• Building value for what I want my dogs to do.
• My use of different cues for turns on tunnels and the dog walk.
• Working your way up to championship level in agility.
• When to retire a dog from competition.
• Keeping track of verbal cues.
• Why to pay attention to your dog’s emotions at the agility start line.
• The importance of focus forward.
• Warm up and cool down routines.
• Starting puppies in dog sports.
• My top five body awareness exercise and why the list depends on age.
• The same thing I do on every lead out to connect with my dog.

0:00.0 | Earlier this week, I put a post on social media asking anybody who is involved with dog sports |
0:16.2 | if they had a question they would like me to address on my podcast. And guess what? I got 84 |
0:23.2 | different questions that came up just in over 24 hours, posted on Instagram, and I'm going to |
0:30.4 | try to answer as many as I can in the next 20 minutes. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett and welcome to |
0:36.5 | shape by dog. If you have no interest |
0:39.4 | in dog sports or are really not familiar with what dog sports are, well, stick with me because |
0:45.6 | there's a lot of questions here that relate to general dog training to begin with. And if my voice |
0:52.6 | seems a little bit raspy, it's because over the last |
0:56.4 | four days, I trained the first ever for us and possibly the first in the world, global |
1:04.6 | agility camp taught entirely through Zoom. It was crazy. We had tons of people on there. We really |
1:15.3 | didn't know what it was going to be like, but by all accounts, it was a massive success. So, |
1:21.6 | that's what prompted me to say, hey, let's talk about dog sports in a podcast. And so I'm going to jump right in. And I got |
1:29.1 | to tell you, I have two online programs to do with dog agility. There's handling 360, |
1:35.9 | which is all about the layers of learning of taking a dog right from the beginning all the way |
1:41.0 | up to being able to run courses, learning how to handle. That means |
1:45.5 | listening to their handler's cues, following direction, following the body, and getting the |
1:49.9 | course correct. And our other online program for dog agility is called Agility Nation. Now, |
1:55.7 | that's all about everything except for handling. Things like teaching a dog how to weave or teaching a dog |
2:02.7 | fitness exercises or human fitness exercises. So, there are two separate programs. One's a membership. |
2:09.4 | Agility Nation's a membership. Why am I telling you all of this? Because at the very end of this |
2:15.6 | podcast, as I was answering these questions, I thought, |
2:17.7 | I got to tell people that some of these answers you could get in much greater detail in |
