Summary
Earlier this week, DoorDash unveiled its own new autonomous robot, called Dot. The company says it’s part of its goal to have a “hybrid” model for deliveries going forward—working with humans, but also drones and autonomous vehicles. It’s the latest sign of a renewed interest in the industry of delivery robots after years of challenges. WIRED’s Aarian Marshall joins us to discuss why it matters for all of us, whether we’re ordering in or not.

| 0:00.0 | Hey Louise, how are you doing? |
| 0:03.3 | Hey, Michael. I'm good. How are you? |
| 0:05.5 | I'm doing well, thanks. Thanks for being here this week. |
| 0:08.6 | Filling in for Lauren. |
| 0:10.1 | Yeah, Lauren is on a really exciting trip to Arizona that I'm sure we'll hear more about soon. |
| 0:15.4 | So as her editor, I am happy to fill in when she's off on an adventure. |
| 0:20.7 | All right. Well, today we're going to be talking about something when she's off on an adventure. All right. |
| 0:21.3 | Well, today we're going to be talking about something that you know a little bit about, robots and delivery apps. |
| 0:27.0 | It's also an intersection that wires Ariane Marshall has been following closely for years. |
| 0:32.4 | So please welcome back to the show. |
| 0:33.8 | Arion, hi. |
| 0:34.8 | Hello. |
| 0:35.9 | Given today's topic, I'm curious to know what is the most unexpected thing you've both |
| 0:41.4 | ordered through a delivery app? |
| 0:43.6 | So I was on a press trip to China recently, and I was taking notes during an interview, |
| 0:48.4 | and I got pen all over my white pants. |
| 0:51.3 | So I ordered, like, the Chinese equivalent of a tied pen. I think that's probably the |
| 0:56.3 | weirdest thing I've ever gotten, you know, on demand. I am so constitutionally against just |
| 1:02.6 | paying for delivery. Even before there were apps, I hated paying delivery people, much respect |
| 1:07.6 | what they do, but I'd rather spend my money in any ways. So I think recently, |
| 1:11.8 | I got really desperate and ordered like pad tie, and that was wild for me. So that's where I am. |
| 1:18.3 | That's your most unexpected thing? Yeah. The fact that I used it at all is unexpected. |
