2019 during a Sunday morning service at West Freeway Church in White Settlement, Texas,

a man stood up near the back of the sanctuary, approached a man standing near one of the back doors,

and opened fire at point-blank range with shotgun.

Services were being live-streamed so the shooting was broadcast as it occurred,

and footage circulated widely online afterward.

The gunman fatally shot two church members, 64-year-old Tony Wallace, a church deacon,

and 67-year-old Richard White, a member of the church's volunteer security team.

Immediately, screaming erupted and congregants scattered away from the gunfire. Within seconds,

volunteer security team members inside the church drew their weapons in response. Jack Wilson,

a 71-year-old former reserve deputy sheriff and head of the church security team, fired a single

shot that hit and killed the shooter, ending the attack. The entire confrontation was over

in just a few seconds. The gunman had attended the church before and had charitably been given

food by the members. Sometime prior to the shooting, he had become angry when asking for money

from the church and being told no. Following the shooting, police described the gunman as a person with a criminal and psychiatric history

and somewhat transient lifestyle prior to the attack.

The West Freeway congregation and broader community mourn the loss of the two men

who were violently gunned down without warning during their Sunday morning worship service.
