Summary

"Every father is different, yet when we hear the descriptions, or see the portrayals of fathers on film, it can feel like we’re the only one who is different. Every other dad, apparently, felt an instantaneous and profound connection to their kids from the moment they first held them."

Not all dads feel the fatherly bond at the outset of their child's life—Ryan explains this feeling in today's Daily Dad Podcast.

Welcome to the Daily Dad podcast where we provide one lesson every day to help you with your

0:14.1

most important job being a dad. These are lessons inspired by ancient philosophy, by practical

0:20.3

wisdom, and insights from dads all over the world.

Thank you for listening, and we hope this helps.

Your bond should grow. Every father is different. And yet when we hear the descriptions or see the

0:39.2

portrayals of fathers on film, it can feel like we're the only one who is different. Every other dad

0:44.5

apparently felt an instantaneous and profound connection to their kids from the moment they first held

0:49.9

them. It was the happiest moment of my life. I broke into tears. I sensed an incredible bond that would

0:55.7

last a lifetime. Maybe many dads do this, or they feel they have to say that they do. But the truth

1:01.9

is that not every father does, and love develops and manifests itself differently. Madison Wickham,

1:08.4

the founder of Total Frat Move, is someone we've quoted here before,

1:12.0

and as he explains it, I expected to experience a deep and magical connection with my son from the

1:18.0

moment he was born. While the experience of childbirth was certainly magical, I didn't feel the

1:22.8

intense fatherly bond I expected. I was concerned that there might be something wrong with me. Maybe I wasn't

1:29.1

ready to be a dad, but as the weeks and months went by, the bond between my son and I grew stronger.

1:34.9

Nine years later, our bond is still growing and our relationship is unlike any relationship I've

1:40.1

ever experienced. Truly magical. Maybe you're assumed to be dad or just a father wrestling with

1:46.1

your own guilt or confusing feelings. This is worth thinking about and knowing. It's not about

1:51.3

how you feel in one moment. Some couples are love at first sight. Many are not. Neither is better or

1:56.3

worse. Neither is right nor wrong. It's about the bond that grows, the bond that you build, not the one

2:02.5

that simply strikes you like an epiphany. So build it. You're listening to a daily dad podcast,

2:09.9

one meditation a day inspired to help you do your most important job, which is be a great father.
