20 years ago, Britain handed Hong Kong back to China. It had been a colony for more than 100 years

and was finally being returned to the mainland. And it's so appropriate that they

should be leaving by sea. I was nine at the time, but I remember the day quite well because I was one of the

children singing in the handover performance it was a really rainy day it was

pouring and we were all a bit nervous. I also remember being surrounded by lots of

performers, pop stars, and Chinese dancers with bright pink fans. The president

even held up a banner saying Hong Kong's future will be better.

But when I went home. But when I went home I saw on the news that there had been protests against the

handover and I realized that people were quite worried. They still are.

So much so that 60% of 18 to 29 year olds now say they want to leave

Hong Kong. When I first met Ellen we talked about how dire the political situation is in Hong Kong.

In a tiny cafe, on one of those days where the rain comes down so hard, the authorities warn

Hong Kong is to stay indoors, I meet Claire and Ellen, a couple in their late 20s,

who are making final preparations to emigrate to England. Claire tells me that, unlike her

parents, she wants more than just economic stability in her future.

For me, I was educated in the Western areas and we analysed the situation and we thought about

politics versus monetary value

and human right values versus instant gratification

for money, for success, for great roads.
