I was reading a story about Bob Bowman, the coach of the Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps,

and how he talked about how Phelps is one of the greatest athletes to ever live, obviously.

Yes, he had incredible routines and rituals that caused him to rise above the competition but here's what

he said he used his imagination and visualized his races daily at the end of

each practice Bob Bowman would tell Phelps to go home and watch the videotape

he would say watch it before you go to sleep and as soon as you wake up.

But here's the thing. The videotape wasn't real. It was a mental visualization of the perfect

race that he would imagine in his head. So each night before he would go to sleep and every morning

after waking up, Michael Phelps would imagine

himself jumping off the blocks in slow motion swimming flawlessly. He would visualize his

strokes, the walls of the pool, the turns that finish, every detail. He said he would lie in bed

with his eyes shut and watch the entire competition, the smallest

details again and again and again until he knew everything, every second by heart.

During practice, his coach would shout, put in the videotape, and Phelps would push himself

as hard as he could.

At competitions, all the coach had to do was whisper.

Get the videotape ready. Well, Michael Phelves is the most decorated Olympian of all time.
