Summary
It started as a dare—one night in an old family home in Portland, Tennessee, built in 1831 and wrapped in local rumor. A teenager didn’t believe the stories, not really, but curiosity won out. After dinner, something as simple as walking past a basement door triggered a sudden, sickened unease—strong enough to make the door feel like a line that shouldn’t be crossed.
The family’s explanation wasn’t comforting. The house had a Civil War-era legend attached to it—an officer, a hidden payroll box, and a woman said to have stayed behind for a reason. No one claimed the house was constantly violent or chaotic. It was worse than that. It was familiar.
As the night stretched on, the sounds began: movement downstairs, subtle activity just out of view, the kind of disturbance that feels deliberate instead of random. And in the early hours—when the house should have been at its quietest—the hallway seemed to wake up.
