Public corporations are owned by the shareholders,

who share in their profits in the form of a dividend,

and who share in the ownership of that company as a shareholder.

They have a, they own a portion of that company.

If you have a stock portfolio, you have a retirement account,

you very likely own a little piece or two of some big companies.

Good chance you own a piece of Exxon.

Good chance you own a piece of Apple,

because these are blue chip stocks that are considered sort of

recession-proof and it doesn't always turn out to be true.

But that makes you a part owner.

And as a part owner, you have certain expectations.

Hey, I give you my money to own a portion of you company,

and I expect your executives to direct the employees

to make decisions that yield the highest return on my investment.

So these corporations are supposed to be in the business

of making profit for their shareholders.

Because remember, the executives don't own the company,

not a public company, the shareholders do.
