Follow the show: L'Oréal Dermatological Beauty: Skin Goals

In this episode of Skin Goals, hosts Lisa Avalos and Kelly Sittler delve into the often-misunderstood topic of eczema, particularly its impact on individuals with darker skin tones. They are joined by Dr. Hawasatu Dumbuya, Director of Clinical Research and Medical Affairs for La Roche-Posay at L'Oréal USA, who shares her expertise and personal connection to this important issue.

Dr. Dumbuya explains what eczema is, its common triggers, and how its appearance can differ on darker skin, often leading to underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis. She emphasizes the crucial role of the skin barrier in protecting against eczema flare-ups and highlights the importance of gentle cleansers and moisturizers containing ingredients like shea butter, niacinamide, glycerin, and ceramides.

This episode also explores the impact of eczema on quality of life, including its effects on self-esteem and daily routines. Dr. Dumbuya shares insights from a recent clinical study conducted by L'Oréal, which demonstrated the positive impact of consistent skincare routines on reducing itching and improving overall well-being for individuals with eczema and severe dry skin (xerosis).

Listeners will gain valuable advice on managing eczema, including identifying personal triggers, practicing consistent skincare habits, and journaling to track symptoms and potential irritants. This episode provides a wealth of information for anyone seeking to understand and manage eczema, especially those with skin of color. Join us for this enlightening conversation on Skin Goals.
