Summary

Knowing what to do is not the same as being able to do it consistently.

Episode #259 — Turbo Talk
🎙️ In this solo episode, Dr. Terri Lance explores the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it.

From fasting interruptions and emotional eating to self-talk and shame spirals, Terri breaks down why behaviour change is about far more than information. She explores the difference between fixed and growth mindset thinking and explains why the meaning we attach to setbacks often determines whether we stay stuck or keep progressing.

This episode is a compassionate look at why "I know better" doesn't automatically translate into lasting change — and how curiosity, not criticism, helps us move forward.

👉 What you'll learn:
• Why knowledge alone doesn't create behaviour change
• The difference between fixed and growth mindset
• How negative self-talk reinforces old habits
• Why setbacks become learning opportunities — not proof of failure
• The role of the "lower brain" in food decisions
• How curiosity helps build long-term progress

The real problem isn't the decision itself.

0:04.1

The real problem is how we interpret that decision and what it means about us.

0:16.3

Welcome back to another episode of the fasting method podcast.

0:21.3

This is Terry Lance and I'm doing a solo episode today because I have something that I wanted to talk with you about that I think is really going to help everyone take their current, maybe stuck point or point of progress and just improve it even more.

0:41.5

And what I want to talk about today is something that has been happening with so many

0:47.3

clients that I work with and so many people in the TFM community that I thought listeners

0:53.1

would benefit as well. So in general, the topic is this.

0:58.2

You know what to do. So why aren't you doing it? This is one of the things that I find brings so

1:06.0

many people the most frustration. Once they learn the different protocols, once they learn about time

1:13.1

restricted eating and making sure they get their salt and magnesium, all of that's down. And yet,

1:20.5

they're struggling to act on what they know. They continue to eat off-planned foods. They continue to snack or graze.

1:29.2

They continue to interrupt their fast by eating some food and then trying to get started again.

1:36.5

The biggest drawback to this issue is that people start to blame themselves and they start

1:43.1

to feel defeated.

1:46.2

They start to feel like there's no hope that this fantastic skill set that they've been learning is ever going to work for them.

1:52.7

So let's break it down a little bit and see what we can do. So last month, Jason and I in an episode

1:59.9

talked about understanding hunger, mindfulness, and mindset.

2:04.8

And one of the biggest questions that comes up is, if I understand all of this, why is it still so hard to actually do it?

2:14.4

And one of the things I try to remind everyone is that doing these things that actually support us

2:21.1

and take good care of us are not the norm in most of our social backgrounds. It's not the norm

2:28.4

maybe within our family. It's not the norm in our work culture. And so in some ways, we feel like we're swimming upstream.

2:37.4

We're swimming against the current.
