Let's satisfy some curiosity. Shark Week is here, and while sharks are pretty cool predators, they fall prey to a few

myths that don't really do them any favors. So let's reveal some shark truths.

First off, sharks do not have to swim non-stop to stay alive.

Some fish breathe using what's called ram ventilation. That's where a fish needs to

constantly swim to keep water ramming down its throat and out through its gills.

And that's one way most sharks breathe.

But only a couple dozen species use that form of breathing alone.

In addition to ram ventilation, sharks can also breathe using a thing called buckle pumping.

When they breathe with buckle pumping, muscles in their cheeks pull water into their mouths and out over their gills.

With that method, some sharks can lie motionless on the sea floor.

So they're great at breathing.

But how about smelling? Can they really smell a drop of blood from miles away?

Not so much. That's a myth. This was tested in 2010 by Dr. Tricia Meredith, who was an assistant research professor

She found that sharks couldn't smell any better than a salmon could.
