Most of us were raised in environments that didn't teach us how to sit with difficult emotions.

We were taught to distract, to explain, to minimize, to move on.

And so when sadness arises, we try to cheer up.

When anxiety surfaces, we look for something to control.

And when anger appears, we turn it inward or away.

We have been conditioned to see emotions as things to escape or manage or overcome.
