Summary

Friends, all three of our readings Sunday speak of a primordial spiritual truth—namely, the need to detach oneself from the goods of the world. This has nothing to do with a hatred of the world or a puritanical spirituality of flight from the world; rather, it has to do with knowing how to wear the goods of the world lightly. These goods—wonderful as they are—all finally crumble, evanesce, and disappear; they are not our ultimate good, and we are not meant to cling to them as though they were.

harped on it with you, but that's okay because I think it's so fundamental in

0:55.0

the spiritual life. I'm talking about the need to detach oneself from the

1:02.4

goods of the world. Let me say it again to detach oneself from the goods of the

1:07.3

world. Now mind you, this has nothing to do with a hatred of the world. This is

1:13.0

not a what they call the Fuga Mundi, a flight from the world spirituality. This

1:17.7

is not Puritanism. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about knowing how to

1:23.0

wear the goods of the world lightly because they're not our ultimate good.

1:29.3

They are good. They're wonderful. They're lovely. They're all kinds of good, true,

1:32.9

and beautiful things in the world, but they're not the ultimate good and we're

1:38.5

not meant to cling to them as though they were. I think the Bible and the great

1:43.7

spiritual tradition teach this truth over and over again because we don't get it.

1:50.1

Now let's begin with the first reading, which I love this book of

Kohalith from the Old Testament. Missum, older folks might remember who's called
