Let's look at Matthew chapter 5 verses 13 through 16.

Here our Lord in his sermon on the Mount directs his attention away from the multitudes to the group of disciples gathered closest to him and he says to them,

ye are the salt of the earth,

but if the salt have lost its savor,

with what shall it be salted?
