Summary
Potty training was going so well… until it suddenly wasn’t.
Let’s discuss why potty training regression is completely normal, what it actually means, and how to get back on track without feeling like you’ve failed your puppy.
You have a stretch of good days, you start to feel confident, and then all of a sudden, the accidents are back. It feels like you’re back at square one, you start asking what you did wrong, and you might even wonder what’s wrong with your puppy.
Here is the truth.Regression is normal. It doesn’t mean you failed. It doesn’t mean your puppy forgot everything. It means you are in the middle of the process.
If this episode really resonates, I also recommend Episode 79: “Are You Still Struggling With Potty Training?” where I walk through the three key points I always cover with clients who are stuck.
In this episode, I talk about:
- What potty training actually looks like (progress in NOT a straight line)
- The most common reason for potty training regression.
- Why regression seems to happen right at the end.
- How a small change in routine can have a big impact on your progress.
- The difference between a random accident and true regression.

| 0:16.3 | Here's your host, Debbie Salento. Hello and welcome to episode 106 of your new puppies podcast. I'm Debbie, |
| 0:34.4 | and today I'm going to give you three ways to upgrade your walk. |
| 0:40.5 | Now, when I say upgrade, I don't mean that we're going to add more time or more distance |
| 0:46.7 | or make it a whole production. |
| 0:49.3 | That's the beauty of this. |
| 0:50.6 | What I want to do is we're going to take the walks you're already doing, |
| 0:55.5 | whether it's your potty breaks, your daily exercise, just getting out of the house, |
| 1:00.3 | and we're going to make them more enriching and more effective in burning that mental and physical |
| 1:07.8 | energy, which means you get an even calmer and more relaxed dog when you get home. |
| 1:13.5 | Because that is the ultimate goal for most of us, right? |
| 1:16.4 | And I thought this would be a perfect time for this episode because it's gotten cold out there for a lot of us. |
| 1:23.3 | And this is right when you want to skip one of those walks or cut it a little short to get back |
| 1:29.4 | inside. And even if you are in a warmer climate, you probably have the same problem, but in the |
| 1:35.8 | summer when it's too hot to be out for any long period of time. I mean, at the end of the day, |
| 1:41.4 | these ideas are going to work year round, whether it's your |
| 1:44.5 | life's busy or your dog has reached adolescence and all of a sudden has this massive |
| 1:50.7 | amount of energy, or maybe the walks are just starting to feel like a chore and we got to |
| 1:56.2 | breathe some new life into it. And the best part is this isn't going to take any extra time or training on your |
| 2:03.6 | part. So let's dive in. The first one is a snuffle walk. In other words, just let them sniff. This one's |
| 2:11.7 | my favorite because it's so simple, but it's so powerful. And we always underestimate how powerful this can be. In fact, |
| 2:21.5 | it takes a lot of convincing of my clients where I'm just like, just try it and you're going to |
