Summary
Tug of war is a game that dogs LOVE to play. Yet I always get asked the question “Can I play tug of war with my dog?”
The short answer is YES! It’s is great game for you and your pup. It’s easy to play, they love it, it burns lots of energy and tires out those heavy chewing jaws and nipping puppy teeth.
So why is this a question? Well, there’s some misconceptions about tug of war that have been going around for a while.
In this episode, I debunk the common myths, like the idea that it’s a dominance game or that you can’t let your dog win.
The vast majority of dogs can play tug of war with no problem. There are some pups that need some rules to reduce any over stimulation or excitement.
No worries, I walk you through what to watch for if this is your pup—like vocal escalation or raised hackles.
Plus, I’ve got a special video for you that shows how to use tug of war to teach your dog important skills like drop it and impulse control.
So, grab your dog’s favorite toy and tune in to find out how you can safely enjoy this fun game with your pup!
In this episode I talk about:
- Can you play tug of war with your dog?
- Why this is even a question.
- Signs to look for if you need to put rules in place.
- How tug of war can benefit your dog.
- Free resource on how to teach your dog impulse control with a game of tug of war.

| 0:33.4 | I'm Debbie, and today I'm going to give you a few ways to create a positive interaction between |
| 0:41.0 | your dog or your puppy and kids. Now, of course, if you have kids in your household, |
| 0:47.7 | you know, this is a great way to teach them how to interact with your dog, especially when |
| 0:53.2 | the puppy first comes home. |
| 0:55.2 | But where I think this is going to be really valuable and valuable to everybody is |
| 1:00.2 | interactions with kids that maybe you don't know that well, or you don't see very often, |
| 1:05.5 | or really it's when you don't have the time or the access to teach them how to positively interact with |
| 1:15.9 | your dog. Now, when I say positively interact, what I'm saying is I want your dog to feel safe |
| 1:23.3 | and respected, especially by kids because kids specifically can overwhelm a dog, because they want to |
| 1:30.9 | get in there, they want to hug the dog, they want to lay down next to him, maybe even on the dog, |
| 1:36.2 | or, you know, they pat the head and even like just being in the same environment, kids are a little |
| 1:43.0 | bit more erratic than adults. They're louder. |
| 1:45.9 | They run around. Maybe they stomp. And that's why it's unfortunately really common for dogs not to |
| 1:52.4 | like kids because they just don't understand them and they don't necessarily feel safe around them. |
| 1:58.2 | So these three things are designed to be super simple and allow you to be |
| 2:05.0 | like, oh, wait, this is how my dog likes to be interacted with. So it's going to be great for socializing |
| 2:10.7 | your dog with kids, especially if you don't have kids in your household. Because when I talk about |
| 2:16.6 | socialization with my clients, I see kids |
| 2:20.0 | as a completely separate category because to your dogs, they are. And I also thought this |
