Summary

You may know that you’re not supposed to punish your puppy’s potty accidents but maybe you don’t know why.

In general, I discourage using punishment as a form of teaching your puppy anything but this question comes up a lot around potty training.

Since, you know I never miss an opportunity to discuss the why behind training I’d like to take the opportunity to answer the questions “why are we not supposed to punish potty accidents?”

In this episode I talk about:

  • Why I get this question around potty training.
  • What I mean by “punishment”
  • What we are supposed to do with potty accidents.
  • Why dogs learn better when told what to do (instead of what not to do).
  • Puppies don’t know going potty inside is wrong.

Press play and enjoy!

host Debbie Salento. Hello and

0:29.0

welcome to episode 92 of your new puppies podcast. I'm Debbie and today I want to talk about

0:35.8

why we don't punish potty accidents. Now if you listen to me you know that in general I minimize punishments and I favor reward-based trading.

0:49.3

But this is still a question I get around potty training and potty accidents because, well, I think it's for a couple of reasons.

0:57.4

One, it's just a very common place. It's a very standard place, old school training that we used to punish our puppy when we found an accident,

1:07.0

from rubbing their nose in it to just yelling at them, to even rolling up a newspaper and hitting them with it.

1:13.0

So maybe when you had a puppy when you were younger,

1:15.8

or your parents or grandparents are giving you advice,

1:18.0

that's how we used to potty train puppies.

1:21.0

But now, we know better. In fact fact most of the time when I get this question

1:25.1

it's all right I know I'm not supposed to punish accidents but why and what am I supposed to do

1:30.8

instead? Now the second part of that question,

1:33.7

I do answer all the way back in episode 10

1:36.9

under my complete guide to the potty training process.

1:40.4

And I'll go over what we're supposed to do in this one just to make sure we're all on the same page.

1:44.4

But here, I want to answer the question, why we don't we punish accidents?

1:49.2

Because if you follow me, you know I'm always going to take the opportunity to teach you the why behind what we do.

1:58.8

Especially with something like potty training because the other reason why I think this comes up a lot is because

2:06.6

it can be a very overwhelming process that wears on our patients. We don't want this in our house, hence why we are potty training

2:16.4

our dog in the first place, and while we're dealing with potty training, we're dealing

2:21.8

with all of the puppy stuff.
