Summary

Potty training can be overwhelming.  The good news is, one of the first things we can check off the list is getting our puppy to sleep through the night.

Potty training overnight is a little different than during the day.  Even though they can hold it longer overnight, they still aren’t going to make more than 4 hours or so at first.

Our goal is to take them out as little as possible while still minimizing the risk for accidents.  I give you the steps to make this happen.

I’ve seen puppies as young as 10 weeks sleep through the night but most will be closer to 16 weeks.

Hopefully, this episode will get you closer to that uninterrupted night’s sleep!

Remember the one thing that trumps all else????  Say it with me WHEN IN DOUBT, TAKE YOUR PUPPY OUT!

In this episode I talk about:

  • How long your puppy can “hold it” overnight
  • What to do before bed to prepare for overnight potty breaks.
  • Why I recommend setting an alarm.
  • How to let your puppy sleep longer while lowering the risk of overnight accidents.
  • Additional tips to make overnights a little easier.

Press play and enjoy!

host Debbie Salento. Hello and

0:29.0

welcome to episode 85 of your new puppies podcast. I'm Debbie and today we're

0:35.6

going to talk about how to help your puppy sleep through the night, specifically

0:40.4

as it pertains to potty training.

0:43.2

So a lot of this stuff I've already talked about

0:46.2

in episode 10, which is my complete guide to potty training,

0:49.7

which I talk a little bit about overnight.

0:52.2

So some of this stuff is the same but some of it is different.

0:55.4

I do have some extra tips for you. Potty training can be an overwhelming and time-consuming process, but one of the first things that we want to do is to get our

1:09.1

puppy to sleep through the night. Because if we have a good night sleep,

1:13.6

they have a good night sleep, things will go

1:16.3

just that much smoother during the day.

1:19.0

So whenever we're talking about potty training

1:21.4

and how long your puppy can hold it. We always want to revisit a

1:24.7

rule of thumb, which is a puppy can physically hold it for one hour for every month they

1:31.2

are old. You can add an hour to that to meet for me. for

1:35.0

medium and large breeds.

1:36.0

And then you can add another hour or two for overnight.

1:40.0

So this is also where I like to clarify that just because we can

1:47.1

get our puppy to sleep overnight and when I say that I mean for six to eight hours. Just because they're holding it for that long overnight

1:56.3

doesn't mean that they're going to be able to do that during the day. You know,
