0:16.8

host Debbie Salento. Hello and welcome to episode 59 of your new puppies podcast. I'm Debbie and today we're going to

0:36.0

talk about how to teach your dog to play fetch. Now this is a little different

0:41.6

from what I usually talk about I don't usually do these like how to teach your dog a specific skill, but I get asked this a lot and it's usually just a few small adjustments that you have to make to teach your dog fetch.

0:57.0

So I thought I'd do an episode about it.

0:59.0

Okay, so the first thing you have to remember that this is something that you have to teach your dog.

1:05.3

It's such a fundamental game.

1:07.1

In fact, it's the one game we think of when we think of playing with our dog outside, right?

1:12.1

So sometimes we forget that dogs need to be taught it.

1:15.2

Now, some dogs will naturally gravitate towards the game

1:19.6

and will act like they've always known how to play it because it's just like in their DNA like

1:25.5

retrievers. Others have to be taught it before they realize how wonderful it is and

1:31.3

others still may never really take to it. They just might not enjoy

1:37.7

the game. So that's also something to keep in mind. And I can't talk about fetch without talking about my dog, Chance. He was a

1:49.4

Labrador Retriever. Unfortunately, he's no longer with us. He was my first dog as an adult.

1:57.0

And what happened was my boyfriend at the time was like, you can get get a dog but I want him to learn how to play fetch.

2:06.7

I've never had a dog that would actually play fetch with me and I was like done deal

2:11.1

no problem and little did we know we'd come to regret that because he was one of those dogs that you had to play at your own risk because once you started he did not stop. He learned to go to like

2:29.2

the new person in the group like if I took him to a friend's house or if I had friends over, he would find the person that didn't know him and encouraged them to play fetch with him because everybody who did know him knew it was play at your own risk because he would not stop.

2:46.3

That is my fair warning to you.

2:50.3

Okay, so the first thing you have to do, and this is where most of us go wrong, is that you have to start

2:57.9

super small and super easy, incredibly short distances.
