Summary

Especially with a new puppy, you’ll hear 20 times a day, play with your puppy, exercise your puppy, stimulate your puppy so they don’t get bored, bond with them to create a strong relationship…

OK OK, we get it’s important but after 160 games of fetch things get a little…well, boring.

In this episode, I’m going to go through 10 ways to play with your dog. And this is just to get you started, it doesn’t stop here, not even close.  In reality, there are hundreds of ways to play with your dog. I want you and your dog to get creative and take it from here.

With the cold weather settling in here in NJ I decided to concentrate on indoor activities.  It’s easy to take things outside and get all the exercise and entertainment you need. It’s when you’re stuck inside that things get harder.

No matter what activity we do with them, we are entertaining, stimulating, and bonding with them.  It’s tiring them out that can sometimes seem impossible.    That is why I also focused on ways that will up the exercise and tiring out factor.  At the end of the day (literally) what we want is a tired and happy dog!

Your dog will probably have their favorites.  I hope you can find something you love, your dog loves AND gets everyone to sleep!

Let’s get those creative juices going!!  Press play to listen and enjoy!!

You are listening to your new puppies podcast. Starting you and your dog off on the right paw. Here's your

0:16.8

host Debbie Salento. Hello and today we're going to talk about 10 ways to play with your dog. So the reason

0:39.9

why I decided to talk about this today is because I talk about all the time how you need to play

0:46.4

with your dog, especially your puppy, and you need to engage with them and spend time with

0:50.3

them and tire them out and exercise them. But how do you do that? I mean after a

0:57.0

while there's only so much toy playing that you can do with your puppy that entertains them and you.

1:04.0

So I just put together a list of ideas and then hopefully these ideas will spark other ones.

1:11.0

I also concentrated on things you can do indoors. Because it's easy to get the exercise outside.

1:19.1

If it's a beautiful day out and the sun's shining and it's your day off, sure, it's easy to take your dog to the park or play

1:27.4

Frisbee in the backyard or go for a nice long walk or a hike.

1:32.1

When we struggle is, you know, in the evenings after work, it's already

1:36.7

dark out. Or, appropriately enough, as I'm recording this episode, there is a winter snowstorm going on outside.

1:45.0

I also focused on ways to up the anti exercise wise so we can increase that tiring out factor. So let's dive right in. The first one, incredibly

1:57.1

simple. Give them a new toy. I've talked about my toy box method before where you don't let them have all their

2:04.9

toys at once you keep most of them put away in a toy box and you rotate. Now this

2:11.5

can be a brand new toy or it could be a toy they just haven't seen in a while, especially a puppy, put it away for like three days, take it back out. It's like a brand new toy. and it will be a lot more fun than that toy that's

2:26.4

been sitting out for two weeks even if it's their favorite. Number two, play a game

2:30.9

of hide and seek. This one's perfect if you have multiple people in your household.

2:37.1

And it's exactly as it sounds. Somebody keeps a puppy in one room, everybody else goes and hides, maybe they have a

2:44.5

handful of their dinner or maybe their favorite treat, and deciding on an order

2:50.8

beforehand one at a time you call your dog and see if they can find you.

2:57.0

Especially with a puppy, you're going to start really super easy and then build your way up to harder and harder hiding places.
