Summary

We are always told “prepare for emergencies.”  The problem is the nature of an emergency is they are unpredictable and the situations are usually not something we expect.  All we can do is do our best to prepare so when it happens we at least have a head start.

The type of emergencies I talk about in this episode is any situation where you either, can’t make it back home or you have to leave your home.  Having a dog can make both of these situations even more complicated.

When faced with an emergency you will have a lot of things to think about.  Planning ahead can take the stress out of the situation that you are dealing with.

In this Episode I walk you through making a list of people, places, and things that you may need in these types of emergencies when it comes to taking care of your dog.  Keep this list in a safe place so it’s ready for you when you need to use it.

My hope for you is that this will be the best time you ever wasted.

Here's your host, Debbie Salinto. Hello and welcome to episode 22 of your new puppies podcast I'm Debbie and today we're going to talk about

0:34.4

separation anxiety so specifically we're going to talk about how to prevent it and

0:38.4

what to do if maybe that your puppy or dog are already showing some signs.

0:43.6

So first, let's talk about the term separation anxiety

0:46.8

and how I'm going to use it throughout this episode.

0:49.7

Because the term separation anxiety,

0:52.4

the technical definition of it is when a dog has a hard time being

0:57.6

separated from a specific person. For example, Maria when I got her, had a lot of trouble being separated from me.

1:06.1

If I left the house, she became frantic.

1:10.1

She would destroy things.

1:11.6

If she got outside, she would jump over the five foot fence and run down the street looking for me.

1:17.6

And it did not matter if somebody else was home, if somebody else was in the house,

1:22.2

it was if I left. That is separation anxiety. What we see more commonly

1:27.9

are dogs who just don't like to be alone. For example, Lucy, when I first got her, just didn't like to be alone.

1:36.4

As long as somebody was home with her, she did not care who it was, she was fine, but if she was

1:40.8

alone, she would panic.'s much much more common but

1:45.0

because there's no single term for that situation we tend to use this term

1:52.1

separation anxiety to include when a dog just doesn't like to be alone as well

1:56.9

And that is exactly what I'm going to do in this episode. I just wanted you to know that there is a subtle difference, but lucky for us, how we handle it,

2:06.7

how we prevent it, and how we treat it, are essentially the same.

2:12.1

So when I say separation anxiety, I'm going to mean both of those situations,
