Summary

When your dog jumps on you, your family and your friends it can quickly turn into an annoying habit.

Luckily there are a few things we can do to prevent or correct this behavior.

Most of the time our dog jumps on us it is to get our attention. And if we are honest most of the time, that is exactly what we give them. Remember attention is attention, good or bad. So even if you are telling your dog no and pushing him off you, to your dog, that’s attention.

Why does your dog jump?

It usually starts when they are puppies because they are so darn cute and it seems harmless. Who can resist those big eyes, right?? Only, when our dogs grow up it may not be as cute and they don’t know the difference. If our pup has always jumped up on us for attention and if it works for them that is what they will always do, muddy paws or not.

In this episode, I talk about preventing, ignoring and redirecting your dog’s jumping. I use coming home as the main example but these tips can be used in whichever scenario your dog is jumping on you.

0:35.0

today we're going to episode 8 of your new puppies podcast. I'm Debbie and today we're going to talk about

0:39.0

when your dog jumps up on people, whether it's you, your family members, or even your guests. So this can be an annoying

0:46.9

habit for sure. It's also a very common one. There's a couple ways to go about correcting this behavior. Today we're going to talk

0:55.2

about ignoring and redirecting the jumping. But first we're going to talk about why dogs

1:01.7

jump up on us in the first place. The vast majority of dogs are doing it

1:06.8

to simply get our attention and if we really think about it when they jump on, that's exactly what we're giving them.

1:15.3

Whether it's we're sitting down and watching TV and he puts his pause in our lap and then all

1:21.3

the sudden we're paying attention to him. Or we're walking in the door and then all of a sudden we're paying attention to him.

1:23.0

Or we're walking in the door and the dog's jumping up and down on us and we're going,

1:27.0

no, no, stop, sit down.

1:30.0

That's still attention. It might be negative attention, but the dog doesn't care.

1:34.4

They're still getting your attention. So usually this starts when they're

1:38.3

puppies because when they're puppies the jumping can be very innocent. They're small they're light, they're puppies, the jumping can be very innocent. They're small, they're light, they're so darn cute.

1:47.6

It's not such a nuisance at that moment, so we're not really thinking about it, and it's's just it's in our human nature that this

1:54.7

adorable big-eyed floppy-eared fuzzball is jumping up looking for attention we're going to bend down

2:02.2

and give it to them. But then they grow up into a

2:06.0

full-sized adult dog and it's not as cute anymore, but now the habit is already there. And even if you don't have a large dog, you don't necessarily

2:16.4

want your dog jumping on your guests or kids or when we're getting dressed up to go out at night, or when they have muddy paws, you get my point.

2:25.0

So the first thing we're going to talk about is prevention.

2:31.0

So if you're lucky enough to have a brand new puppy at home, a nice clean slate in this habit hasn't started yet, then we are going to nip it in the bud.
