Hello and welcome back to yesterday today, today, the offshoot podcast of Dark Historys.

I'm your host, Ben, as always. To be honest, I don't know why I always say that. I'm always your host. It never changes, not for nearly 10 years, but still some reason that's just stuck in my head as the way I open.

0:26.6

So, yep, I'm your host, Ben, as always.

This episode is for the week of the 9th of November.

0:32.9

And if you recall, I think, a couple of yesterday today episodes back, we were talking quite a bit about Jack the Ripper.

0:40.4

And unsurprisingly, perhaps, this week, we're straight back there again.

0:44.9

As 137 years ago to this very day was a big day in that story.

0:51.2

So we're going to dig deep into that a little bit.

So to sort of catch up, there's not really been anything happening for just over a month with the Jack the Ripper story,

1:03.9

which means that actually the morning papers from the 9th of November were more or less the same as what's been happening for the last or four weeks,

1:11.2

which is basically then printing fairly tenuous links and hoaxes. And that's been about it.

1:19.0

And yes, like I say, this morning, the 9th of November, absolutely no surprise, it's exactly the same thing.

1:25.1

The most prevalent piece in the Friday papers was a

1:29.8

supposed piece of paper that was picked up in Spittlefields and that was reported on quite

1:34.3

heavily so the story for that goes. The East End murders. The following notice was read out

1:39.7

to the police late on Saturday night as printed in the information at Whitechapel. Today, a piece of paper was

1:45.8

picked up in Spittlefields, which was written, Dear Boss, in spite of all your police precautions,

1:51.4

and in spite of the efforts of the vigilance committee, I committed another murder last night

1:55.6

and have hid the body away in Osborne Street, headless, legless, armless and naked. Yours truly, Jack the Ripper.

2:02.7

Although the matter is looked upon as a hoax, all constables were ordered to make every inquiry

2:07.2

into the neighbourhood to see if anything had been found or whether anyone was missing. They were,

2:11.9

however, specially enjoined to use their utmost endeavours to try to trace the author of the writing.
