The first batch of documents relating to Lord Mandelson's appointment as ambassador to the United States

are due to be released early next month.

MPs were given the news when they returned

to Westminster on Monday the 23rd of February after a half-term break and just as the former

cabinet minister was being arrested at his home in London on suspicion of misconduct in public

office. The video footage of Peter Mandelson being led to an unmarked police car

was first broadcast as Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister,

was updating MPs about plans to release thousands of documents

relating to Lord Mandelson's appointment as the UK ambassador to Washington.

The government expects to be able to publish the first tranche of documents very shortly

in early March. I should, however, inform the House that it remains the case that a subset

of this first tranche of documents is currently subject to the ongoing Metropolitan Police

investigation. This includes correspondence between Number 10 and

Lord Peter Mandelson, in which a number of follow-up questions were asked. Lord Mandelson was arrested at

his home in London on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The police have been investigating

allegations that when he was a government minister, he shared market-sensitive information with Geoffrey Epstein.

The BBC understands that Peter Mandelson's position has consistently been

that he has not acted criminally and that he was not motivated by financial gain.

No MP mentioned this latest development.
