Hello, I'm Susan Hume and this is the yesterday in Parliament podcast.

On Thursday, the 4th of December, MPs discussed the findings of the inquiry into the

Solesbury Poisonings in 2018, in which one woman, Don Sturgis died after coming into contact with the Novichok nerve agent

used in the attempted assassination of the Russian double agent, Sergei Skripal.

Russia has always denied having anything to do with the Novichok attack in Salisbury seven years ago,

but somehow the main findings of the inquiry don't seem all

that surprising. The chair concludes that the operation must have been signed off at the highest

level of the Russian state, including President Putin. That was the security minister, Dan Jarvis.

Those who were involved in the assassination attempt against Sergei Scrippal

were morally responsible for Dawn's death and that deploying a highly toxic nerve agent in a busy

city was an astonishingly reckless act. Dan Jarvis went on to describe how Russia was still up to no good in the UK,

and he detailed the government's response,

involving sweeping new sanctions against the Russian intelligence service,

the GRU, expulsions, and the unmasking of spies.

The Conservative opposition spokesperson Chris Philp

usually takes the opposition bit of his title very seriously, but not this time.

I think I agree with and support everything the security minister said.

He said Russia's malign activity around the world meant the West must be steadfast in supporting Ukraine.

And he had a warning against giving Moscow too much in a peace

deal. Appeasement doesn't work. Showing weakness when faced with an aggressive dictator simply
