On Thursday the 29th of January,

the government again rejected claims for compensation from women born in the 1950s.

The group, known as the Waspy women, say they weren't properly warned about

a rise in the state pension age. The work in pension secretary's announcement didn't go down

well in the Commons. I must say that this is a disappointing statement. He will recognise

that there is a real sense of injustice that has been done to those women.

The Secretary of State knows just how disappointing so many will find this statement.

The problem for Pat McFadden was that all those complaints came from Labour MPs.

Campaigners say 3.6 million women weren't properly informed about the rise in their state pension age.

The government had previously rejected their claim for compensation, but in the autumn,

ministers decided to reconsider the decision after receiving additional information.

Announcing the result of that review, the Work and Pension Secretary accepted that letters about the change

could have been sent earlier.

And I am sorry that those letters were not sent sooner.

But having reviewed all the information,

the government had come to the same conclusion

and wouldn't be paying compensation.

Pat McFadden said the vast majority of women knew about the age change. To specifically compensate only those women who

suffered injustice would require a scheme that could reliably verify the individual circumstances
