On Thursday, the 24th of July, a minister rejected suggestions that the government was trying to water down a new Hillsborough law.

Members of the House of Lords were told that the government was committed to bringing in proposals to force public officials to be fully transparent at inquiries or face the full might of the law.

Supporters of the so-called Hillsborough law have been waiting a long time. The first attempt to force public officials to be open and honest at major inquiries was in 2017.

Last September, the Prime Minister promised to introduce what he called a law for Liverpool, a law for the 97,

a reference to the number of fans who died as a result of the 1989 disaster.

Sequeer Stama said it would be done by the 36th anniversary in April.

The Justice Minister, Lord Ponsonby, told peers yesterday that Labour was committed to changing the law.

achieved the change expected by those who have campaigned so hard for change. Since March,

we have listened to stakeholder feedback to ensure that we deliver the best

bill possible. This engagement has been constructive and progress have been made.

Campaigners want any legislation to include a legal duty of candor to prevent any future

cover-ups. A Liberal Democrat and former leader of Liverpool City Council, Lord Story,

wanted a clear commitment that the bill wouldn't be watered down.

The tragic events at Hillsborough will always be etched on our minds and the appalling establishment

cover-up that followed. Lord Ponsonby agreed that there had been an establishment cover-up after Hillsborough

and said it must never happen again.

Under the Hillsborough law, public officials will be bound by duties of candour

with criminal and professional consequences.
