Thanks for downloading the Yesterday in Parliament podcast.

On Friday the 24th of April, the assisted dying bill for England and Wales

failed to become law after it ran out of parliamentary time.

MPs had passed the bill in the Commons,

but when it got to the Lords,

peers put down more than a thousand amendments.

Extra days were allocated for debate,

but the Lords failed to get through all the proposed changes,

and with this parliamentary session due to end shortly,

the legislation ran out of time.

The Labour peer, Lord Faulkner, who'd shepherded the bill through the upper house,

wearily expressed his disappointment.

I am despondent that this bill, so important to so many,

has not failed on its merits, but failed as a result of procedural wrangling.

A Conservative former Deputy Prime Minister, Lady Coffey, was one of the peers

who'd put down dozens of amendments to the bill.

She argued there were real concerns about safety.

I do fear that many peers and many MPs are putting choice for some ahead of concern

on coercion for others.

And just like happened in the Scottish Parliament, the more scrutiny this bill has got,
