On Wednesday the 21st of May, the Prime Minister announced a U-turn on one of his most controversial policies.

Sakea Stama said he wanted more pensioners to be eligible for the winter fuel payment, but didn't say how or when that would happen.

PMQ started routinely enough with a question from a Labour MP about help for struggling pensioners.

The Prime Minister's reply was more surprising.

As the economy improves, we want to make sure people feel those improvements in their days

as their lives go forward. And that is why we want to ensure that as we go forward, more pensioners

are eligible for winter fuel payments. Millions of pensioners lost the payments worth up to £300 a year

when the Chancellor took them away from all but the least well off just after the general election.

So while that's set to change, Kier-Starma made clear everyone would have to wait for the detail.

We will only make decisions we can afford.

That is why we will look at that as part of a fiscal event.

That's a budget to you and me and the next one's expected in the autumn.

The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenock, didn't immediately scoop up that announcement,

instead challenging the Prime Minister on the latest inflation figures

and on the day's front page news suggesting that the deputy prime minister, Angela Rainer,

had called for tax increases as a way of raising money.

When she did turn to the big U-turn,

Kemi Badernock reckoned there was trouble ahead for Kirstama.

When this inevitable U-turn on Winterfield comes,

and it will, from a desperate prime minister,

what will he say to the 348 MPs who went over the top and voted for the winter fuel cut last September?
