Hello, I'm Susan Hume and this is the Yesterday in Parliament podcast. On Monday the 15th of

December, Westminster contemplated the horror of the Bondi Beach attack and asked what could be

done for the safety of Jewish people in the UK. Beneath the statue of Sir Winston Churchill

in Parliament Square, candles were lit to honour the 15 people murdered in a hate attack as they were

celebrating the Jewish Festival of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach. And although Sydney is more than 10,000

miles away from Westminster, the Prime Minister acknowledged the effect

here. It has impacted not just in Australia but across the globe and it has impacted on

Jewish communities here in the United Kingdom that I know feel even more insecure today than

they did before. Sir Keir Starrmer appearing before the liaison committee of senior MPs.

He told them he'd had many conversations since the atrocity, including with the chief

rabbi, about security for Hanukkah events in the UK.

This is clearly not an isolated incident.

And these incidents are chillingly focused on some of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.

And of course we have in our minds, Heaton Park here in the United Kingdom in October.

On the 2nd of October, an attacker drove his car at a security guard and then tried to get into the synagogue to stab people gathering there for Yom Kippur.

The Prime Minister said he wanted to reassure Jewish communities in the UK that he'd take every step possible to make sure they were as safe as they should be.

Certainly, over in the House of Lords,

Lord Polack, a conservative, wanted action. I'm tired. I'm tired of listening to people saying

will stand shoulder to shoulder with the community. My Lords, it means nothing when there are

dead Jews on the ground, whether in Manchester or in Sydney.

If noble lords are not clear what globalised the interfaida means, it was on our TV screens yesterday.
