Hello, I'm Sean Curran, and this is yesterday in Parliament from BBC Radio 4.

The UK's climate is getting hotter and wetter, according to the Met Office.

And on Monday the 14th of July, the Energy Secretary Ed Miliband called on political opponents to join forces to tackle climate change.

If the Energy Secretary gets his wish, in years to come, the MPs who gathered in the Commons

yesterday will be able to say they witnessed the start of a great parliamentary tradition.

Ed Miliband had come to the Chamber to mark the publication

of the latest report from the Met Office with a statement on the state of climate and nature

in the UK and in the hope that it would become an annual event. He acknowledged the anxiety many

young people felt about climate change and said

they were right to be worried. But he insisted there was still time to limit the worst effects.

The choices we make as a country have influenced the course of global action. And in doing so,

reduce the impact of the climate and nature crisis

on future generations in Britain. To those who say, Britain cannot make a difference. I say,

you are wrong. Stop talking our country down. British leadership matters.

For the Conservatives, the shadow energy minister, Andrew Bowie,

said the global climate challenge wouldn't be solved by the UK on its own,

and it couldn't be solved on the backs of British workers or bill payers.

Global warming is a global challenge

and his plans will have a negligible or even negative impact

on global emissions, I am afraid.
