Hello, I'm Susan Hume and this is the Yesterday in Parliament podcast.

On Tuesday, the 11th of November, MPs discussed the recent troubles at the BBC.

At a time when the lines are being dangerously blurred between fact and opinion, news and polemic,

the BBC stands apart. It is a light on the hill for people here and across the world.

Not that she was condoning failings, but...

There is a fundamental difference between raising serious concerns over editorial failings

and members of this House launching a sustained attack on the institution itself.

Because the BBC is not just a broadcaster.

It is a national institution that belongs to us all.

While her conservative shadow Nigel Huddleston didn't quite see the BBC as a light on the hill at the moment.

The BBC is in a sorry mess and sadly one of its own making.

Yes, he admired programmes like Strictly and Traitors, the sports coverage and natural history shows,

but there were too many examples of bias at the BBC over trans rights,

the coverage of Gaza and panorama's editing of President Trump's speech, which might lead to a

billion-dollar lawsuit. The problem? Too much groupthink among programme makers. That must change.

The BBC's culture needs to change. And does the minister agree that the BBC

must provide a fulsome apology to the US president and hopefully avoid legal action? And

does she agree that the BBC would do well to apologise to the British public too?

Lisa Nandi agreed that the resignations of the Director General and the Head of News

were not the answer to the challenges the BBC faced.
