Hello, I'm Sean Curran, and this is yesterday in Parliament from BBC Radio 4.

On Wednesday, the 11th of March, the government was challenged about its plans for petrol prices

and the Prime Minister's judgement.

If you've filled up your car recently, simply walked past a petrol station forecourt,

you'll have noticed that prices have started to creep up since the start of the conflict in the Middle East.

Later this year, the tax on petrol and diesel, fuel duty, is due to increase

when a cut of five pence per litre introduced

following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine

is set to be phased out.

At Prime Minister's questions,

the Conservative leader Kemi Badenok

focused on prices at the pumps.

Why does the Prime Minister think now is the right time to increase the cost of petrol?

Prime Minister?

Mr Speaker, we are not increasing the cost of petrol.

Conservative MPs shouted, yes you are at Sir Keeney Badenock pressed the point.

The Prime Minister told us at the start of the year

that the cost of living was his number one priority.

So can he explain how a rise in fuel duty helps with the cost of living?

Mr Speaker, fuel duty is frozen.

It's going to remain frozen until September and we will keep the situation
