Hello, I'm Susan Hume and this is the Yesterday in Parliament podcast.

On Thursday the 8th of May, MPs had the chance to question a minister about the UK-US trade agreement,

but they were made to wait for it.

The VE Day celebrations had been planned in detail for months and months.

What probably no one foresaw was that they'd be upstaged by Donald Trump

and his early morning signal that a UK-US trade agreement was imminent.

All day MPs were told to expect a government statement in the Commons.

But the announcement screens only said that it would happen later.

It was like waiting for white smoke.

The scheduled business finished and still nothing.

Lots of MPs go back to their constituencies on a Thursday.

Some have a long way to travel.

So the DUP's Jim Shannon, who hates to miss anything in the Commons, was getting jumpy.

There's three of us sitting here, either side of myself. We have planes to catch and there's a

time scale that we need to be away from here to try and catch those planes. So, when was the

statement? If it's not happening, then let us go.

The Deputy Speaker Judith Cummins couldn't really help.

A statement is expected on trade negotiations.

I have no further information on the timing of this statement.
